About the Comic

“Felix and Anya” is an illustrated short story that follows two college students as they examine the impacts of intergenerational trauma in their lives.

After an academic presentation sparks their interest, each begins to explore the origins of their habitual ways of dealing with discomfort and anxiety. Felix discovers he may have inherited patterns of escape and avoidance, including alcohol and technology addiction. Anya questions why she can no longer feel anything and wonders whether she should quit taking her anxiety medication.

During a Physical Education wilderness camping weekend, something goes unexpectedly wrong. With each other’s support, Felix and Anya spontaneously assume leadership roles and discover a resilience neither knew they had. They gradually understand they developed this capacity in reaction to trauma in their lives. Vulnerability comes to be seen as a strength, and a challenging upbringing as a gift.

Felix and Anya invites readers to reflect on the impacts of trauma on society and understand the ways trauma survivors can integrate and accommodate overwhelming experiences. As one student mentioned, “The comic hits home but not too hard, making a taboo subject easy to talk about.”

We invite readers to reflect upon the ways they can foster more compassionate relationships with themselves and others. Please share Felix and Anya with your friends, colleagues and students.

This project has been generously supported by a grant from Entente Canada Québec and assessed for its potential as a teaching and learning resource at Dawson College, John Abbott College and Nunavut Arctic College in a variety of disciplines and programs in General Education, Social Sciences and Professional programs beginning in 2018-2019.

We thank our colleagues and students who participated in the project.

About the Creators

Daniel Goldsmith

Daniel Goldsmith

Writer and researcher

Daniel Goldsmith is professor of humanities at Dawson College and the author of Choose Your Metaphor: Walking the One Path that Goes by Many Names. When he’s not chasing after his two young children, you might find him hiking in the Quebec countryside with a book of philosophy and a yoga mat on his back.

After learning about the work of Rachel Yehuda and Bessel van der Kolk, Daniel became fascinated with how trauma could be transmitted intergenerationally, and the role that the body plays in storing traumatic memories. His work on Felix and Anya was born out of the desire to inspire, inform, and educate others about the impact of trauma in their lives. He hopes that Felix and Anya will open a space for us to pause and reflect on the way we conceptualize and respond to trauma.
